An ice maker is the most water-sensitive part of any west-metro kitchen, and the water it gets is the hardest thing in the house. Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Chanhassen, Edina and Bloomington all pump from deep wells, and the fill valve on your refrigerator sees every grain of that hardness every time it opens for a few seconds. Scale builds in the valve seat and the quarter-inch fill tube until the tray gets half a fill, the cubes come out small and hollow, and one day the valve sticks shut. We work out of Eden Prairie and carry the fill valves for every common refrigerator, because this is the repair we do more than any other.
Winter adds a second failure the manuals skip. Refrigerators in garages and unheated mudrooms from Hidden Ponds to the Bloomington split-levels have a fill tube that runs along a cold wall, and in a January stretch below zero that tube freezes solid and the ice maker simply stops. The rest of the year the failures are more ordinary: a module motor that quit mid-harvest, a heater that no longer releases the cubes, an auger jammed in the door dispenser of a French-door unit, or a water filter that was due in March and is still in there in September.
The fill valve is not opening, the fill tube is frozen, the module has stopped, or the water supply behind the fridge is off. We test the valve solenoid with the meter, check for water at the tray, and look at the tube before anything else. The most common answer in the west metro is a scaled valve.
The tray is only getting a partial fill. Scale has narrowed the fill valve or tube, the water pressure is low, or the filter is overdue and choking flow. We measure the fill and pressure, replace a scaled valve, and confirm the filter is not the bottleneck so the new valve gets a fair start.
An old water filter, food odors migrating through the freezer, or a bin that has not been emptied in months. We change the filter if it is due, clean the bin and tray, and check that the freezer is holding temperature so the cubes stop absorbing whatever is beside them.
The mold heater or the ejector motor has failed, so the cubes freeze into a block the arm cannot clear. On some models the thermostat that starts harvest has quit. We test the heater and motor with the meter and replace the module or its components from the truck.
The auger motor in the door is stalled, cubes have fused into a clump in the bin, or the dispenser flap is stuck. We clear the bin, test the auger motor under power, and check the door switch that tells the dispenser it is safe to run.
A fill valve dribbling after it should have closed, a cracked fill cup, or a tray that has been overfilling because the valve is scaled and slow to seat. We test the valve for seepage, replace it if it will not seal, and thaw and clear any ice that has built up under the tray.
The technician pulls the refrigerator forward, checks the supply valve behind it, and puts a gauge on the line, because low pressure and a scaled valve look identical from the kitchen side. Then the meter goes on the fill valve solenoid and the module’s motor and heater while a test harvest runs. Within a few minutes it is clear whether water is reaching the tray, whether the tray is freezing, and whether the module is doing its part. You get the name of the failed piece in plain words and one number on paper. Approve it and the part usually comes off the truck that visit; say no and $99 is all you owe.

The tray is not getting a full charge of water. On Eden Prairie’s well water the usual reason is scale narrowing the fill valve or the tube behind it; a filter long past its date does the same thing. We measure the fill volume, test the valve, and replace what is restricting the flow so the cubes come back full size.

The fill tube runs along a cold wall of the cabinet and freezes when the garage drops well below freezing, which Eden Prairie and the west metro manage for weeks every January. We can thaw it, check for a failed tube heater on models that have one, and reroute or insulate the line so it survives the next cold snap.
Sometimes, and it is worth changing if it is overdue. But a filter does not remove hardness, so scale keeps building in the valve regardless. If a fresh filter does not restore full cubes within a day or two, the valve or the tube is the problem and the $99 diagnostic will confirm which.
