The first week below zero is dryer season for us. Vent flaps on the outside of houses from Hennepin Village to Hyland Lake ice shut, the moist air backs up, and the lint in the duct freezes into a plug that no amount of cycling will clear. The dryer runs hot with nowhere to send the heat, the thermal fuse does its job, and the phone rings. From the shop just off Prairie Center Dr we run these calls up Hwy 101 into Minnetonka, east on I-494 toward Edina and Bloomington, and west along Hwy 5 to Chanhassen, with a vent brush and a box of fuses on every truck.
Where the dryer lives changes what breaks. Eden Prairie and Plymouth builders put laundry rooms on the second floor or in the middle of the house, which means thirty feet of duct with two elbows before the air sees daylight. Minnetonka basements and Edina ramblers vent straight through a rim joist, short and easy, but the flap freezes just the same. Townhomes near Eden Prairie Center and apartments off Shady Oak Rd stack the dryer on the washer in a closet with a crushed foil hose behind it. Gas dryers are common in the older stock, electric in the newer, and both come with an igniter or an element that eventually quits.
On an electric dryer this is usually the heating element or the thermal fuse; on gas it is the igniter, the flame sensor or a gas valve coil. The meter finds which in a few minutes. We also check why the fuse blew, because a blocked vent will take out the new one too.
Airflow. The vent is packed with lint, the exterior flap is frozen or stuck, or the duct has collapsed behind the machine. We measure airflow at the outlet, clear the run when it is the cause, and confirm the moisture sensor and cycling thermostat are doing their part.
Drum rollers, the idler pulley or the rear bearing have worn flat, or a belt is fraying. A coin or bra wire in the blower housing also rattles. We pull the drum, replace the worn support parts as a set, and spin it quietly before the panels go back on.
Stop the dryer and call. Lint has collected on the element or in the burner area, or a belt is slipping and heating up. We clean the interior cabinet, inspect the heater and vent, and replace whatever is scorched. This one gets an early window because the alternative is a fire.
A motor with tired start windings, an overheating thermostat or a control board losing power under load. Gas units also stop when the flame sensor fails to prove ignition. We watch the shutdown with the meter connected so the fault shows itself instead of being inferred.
A door switch that no longer closes the circuit, a blown thermal fuse on some models, a failed start switch or a tripped breaker on a 240-volt line. We test the door switch first because it is the most common, then follow the power path through the fuse and the board.
A dryer has one job, moving hot air through wet clothes, and every fault sits in either the heat or the air. The technician opens the cabinet, clips the meter to the heating circuit and reads element or igniter, fuses, thermostats and the flame sensor one by one. Then the airflow gets measured where the duct leaves the machine, because half the dryers that come to us for no heat are really venting problems wearing a fuse as a disguise. You get the failed part named plainly and one price on paper. Approve it and the part usually comes off the truck that visit; decline it and you owe the $99 and nothing more.
We repair Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, GE, Samsung, LG, Electrolux, Amana and Speed Queen dryers, plus the Bosch and Miele condensing units in the condos along France Ave and in the Minnetonka lake homes. Landlords managing units around Eden Prairie Center or Uptown can let the tenant open the door while the owner approves by text, with paperwork emailed. Shift workers at Optum, the airport and the Shakopee warehouses can book an early or late slot. Probably not. When the vent flap ices shut or frost cements the lint in the duct, the dryer overheats and the thermal fuse opens to protect it. The fix is a new fuse plus a cleared vent; replacing the fuse alone means doing it again in a week. We check both on the same visit.
Yes, both. Gas dryers in the older Edina, Bloomington and Minnetonka houses fail at the igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils; electric dryers in newer Eden Prairie and Chanhassen homes fail at the element and fuses. We carry the common parts for both and test the gas line connection before we leave.
When the vent is the cause of the fault, clearing the run between the dryer and the exterior flap is part of the written repair price you approve. If the duct is long, crushed inside a wall, or needs replacing, we tell you so at the door before the number is written, so nothing is added afterward.
Most are finished in one visit of about an hour, since elements, igniters, fuses, belts and rollers ride on the truck. A control board or a specific motor may need ordering; in that case the written price holds and we return without a second trip fee, usually within the week.
