Chanhassen is Hwy 5 west from Prairie Center Dr, past Dell Rd and into the subdivisions that filled in from the 1990s through the 2010s: Longacres, the streets off Galpin Blvd and Powers Blvd, the newer neighborhoods along Lyman Blvd and Pioneer Trail toward Lake Riley and Lake Susan. These are houses built with a three-car garage, a walk-out lower level and a kitchen wide enough for a French-door refrigerator, and nearly all of them have a second refrigerator either in that garage or behind the bar downstairs. The kitchen unit is often the builder’s Whirlpool or GE on its second decade, or a Samsung or LG set bought as a package when the counters were redone.
Two failures dominate Chanhassen refrigerator calls. The first is the garage refrigerator that stops the week the thermometer by the Lake Ann beach reads twenty below: the garage falls under 40°F, the thermostat is satisfied, and the freezer side quietly thaws a season’s worth of venison. The second is the kitchen French door whose top section warms to 50°F while the freezer holds, which is a defrost heater or thermistor letting the evaporator glaze over. Behind both stands the third, quieter one: a condenser under the machine matted with dog hair after five months of shut windows, making the compressor run all day for nothing.
Defrost failure, nearly always. We open the freezer back wall, find the iced evaporator, and meter the heater, the defrost thermostat and the thermistor. Whichever failed is replaced from the truck, the coil is thawed correctly rather than chipped, and the fresh-food side is on its way down before we pack up.
The start relay or overload is failing to bring the compressor up, or the compressor itself has a shorted winding. We test the relay and read the windings before saying which. A relay is swapped in minutes; a compressor on a fifteen-year-old builder-grade unit is a plain talk about replacement.
A frozen or plugged defrost drain, a cracked drain pan, or a weeping ice-maker fill valve. We find the source, clear and thaw the drain, and check the valve. On the walk-out lower level, a puddle behind the bar refrigerator can sit unnoticed for weeks, so we check the floor around it too.
Warm air is leaking in past a gasket that has hardened or a door that dropped on its hinge, or the defrost system has quit altogether. We test the seal, adjust or replace the door hardware, and run a forced defrost to see whether the heater responds.
The garage is colder than the thermostat’s range, so the compressor is not being asked to run. The refrigerator is fine. We verify it, explain the limit, and fit a garage kit on models that accept one so the freezer stays frozen through a Chanhassen winter.
A condenser choked with pet hair, a condenser fan that has slowed to a wobble, or a low refrigerant charge. We clean the coil, meter the fan, and read the frost pattern on the evaporator. The first two are fixed on the spot; the third is a conversation about the age of the box.
We open with a thermometer in each compartment and a few questions: when it started, whether the garage door was open a lot, whether the machine sounds different. Next the freezer’s back wall comes out. An iced evaporator points us at the defrost circuit; a clear one points at the compressor, its relay and the fans. The condenser is pulled and cleaned as a matter of routine, because a Chanhassen house with a golden retriever fills it in a winter. The failed part is named in plain words, shown to you where possible, and one number is written before any repair. Most kitchen refrigerators are cooling again before we leave.
Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, Kenmore, KitchenAid and Maytag refrigerators fill the Chanhassen calendar, with Bosch and the occasional Sub-Zero or Thermador in the larger houses on Lake Minnewashta and Lotus Lake. Townhome associations along Hwy 101 and the rentals near downtown and West 78th St can have the tenant host while the owner approves by text and gets the invoice and written warranty by email. Pricing is one rule: $99 for the diagnostic, folded into the repair price you approve. If you decline, $99 is the entire bill. Nothing is priced before the meter has been on the machine.

Almost certainly not. Under about 40°F in the garage the thermostat believes the box is cold and stops calling for the compressor, so the freezer thaws while the fridge section sits idle. Move the food inside. Some models take a garage kit that keeps them running in the cold, and we can tell you if yours does.
