Bloomington pumps its water from wells, and the raw hardness is high enough that a softener is standard equipment in most houses and absent in most apartments. In the post-war ramblers east of France Ave, a softener in the basement corner that ran out of salt in October shows up as a scaled dishwasher heater in December. In the split-levels west toward Hyland Lake and Bush Lake, a bypass valve left open after a water heater swap does the same thing. In the apartment buildings along American Blvd and 98th St there is no softener at all, and the dishwasher lives on raw water from day one. We come in on I-494 and test the tap before the machine.
The sequence we see most often: the rinse aid runs out, nobody notices, and within a month the glasses have a haze that does not wipe off. Someone tries a vinegar cycle, which helps for a week. By the time we get the call, the heating element has a crust, the spray arm holes are half closed, and the inlet valve is filling slow. We descale what can be descaled, replace what cannot, and then have a plain conversation about salt and rinse aid, because a repaired dishwasher on unsoftened Bloomington water will be back where it started by spring. A flattened door gasket, a spray arm hitting the vent in the door, a leaking pump seal, or a float switch stuck so the tub overfills. We run a full fill with the toe kick off and watch. In a split-level with the kitchen over the family room, we check the ceiling below too.
Iron in the well water oxidizing under heat. The dishwasher is the victim, not the cause. We verify nothing inside is corroding, clean the tub and the racks, and explain what an iron filter or a properly regenerating softener would change. Scrubbing alone will not keep ahead of it.
The technician starts at the sink with a hardness strip, because a reading of twenty grains changes what we expect to find inside the machine. Then the toe kick comes off, the dishwasher runs, and we watch the inlet valve open and time the fill, listen to the circulation pump under load, and meter the heater when the cycle calls for it. The filter and sump come out for a look at what has collected. On a drain complaint the hose is traced to the disposal or the air gap and the pump is tested directly. The failed component is named in plain words and one price is written. Approval comes before any part is changed.

No. It is iron from the well water, oxidized by the heater. The machine is not corroding, though we confirm that when we are inside it. The fix is at the softener or an iron filter, and we say so rather than sell you a part that will not change it.
A drain fault. Either the drain path is blocked, kinked or too long, or the filter and sump are packed. E25 on the same machine points to the pump or its impeller. We clear the path, test the pump, and check the hose routing through the cabinet.
The diagnostic charge is $99. After testing, you receive one written number for the full repair, and that $99 is already part of it rather than an extra line. If you decide not to repair, $99 is the whole invoice. We do not quote repairs without seeing the machine.
