Bloomington’s water comes out of the ground hard, and nothing in a kitchen feels that faster than the ice maker in the refrigerator door. The fill valve has a tiny orifice, every shot of water leaves a film of calcium on it, and after a few years the opening is half what it was. In the split-levels around Hyland Lake and Normandale the refrigerator often backs onto a garage wall and the supply line to the valve chills in January. East of France, the ramblers run the line off a saddle valve under the sink that mineral has been closing since the 1990s.
The winter call is a frozen fill tube. A valve that no longer seals dribbles after each fill, the dribble freezes in the tube, and within days the tube is a plug of ice and the tray sits dry. A hair dryer opens it for a week; replacing the dribbling valve ends it. The summer call is a bin welded into a single block after a humid week with the freezer door not quite shut, or a French-door ice room frosting up because its gasket has flattened. Both halves of the year start the same way for us: a thermometer in the freezer, a hardness strip at the sink, and a meter on the valve.
A scaled-shut fill valve, a frozen fill tube or supply line, a failed module or optic sensor, or a shutoff arm parked in the off position. We test the valve coil and flow, inspect the tube, cycle the module by hand, and make sure the freezer is cold enough to trigger a harvest at all.
Short fill. The valve or its screen is scaled, the filter is past its date, or the saddle valve under the sink is nearly closed. We measure how much water lands in the tray against the specification, then clear or replace the restriction. In Bloomington, the valve is the answer more often than the filter.
A valve that does not seal cleanly after the fill, or a freezer running colder than set at the tube. We thaw the tube fully, seal-test the valve and replace it when it weeps, and check the tube heater on models that have one. Thawing without replacing the valve just books the next visit.
A valve stuck partly open on a scaled seat, or a module commanding a second fill. We replace the valve, break out and remove the sheet, clear the auger, and run two harvest cycles to confirm the fill volume is right. Overflow that reaches the floor is checked for damage below.
The auger motor has failed, the door flap is stuck and frosting the bin, or cubes have fused in the chute. We meter the auger motor and the flap solenoid, clear the chute, and check the bin gasket. On French-door models with the ice room in the door, the room seal is tested too.
An overdue filter, stale ice absorbing odors, or a fill line with a biofilm. We change the filter, wash the bin, flush the line, and dump the first two batches. If the refrigerator itself smells, that is a defrost drain or a spill under the crispers and we look there.
An ice maker gives up its secret in about twenty minutes if the steps run in order. The freezer must be at or below 5°F or the module will never harvest, so that is measured first. Then the valve: coil resistance with a meter, fill volume in a measuring cup, and a seal check after it closes. Then the module is cycled by hand while we watch the ejector, the heater and the arm. Then the tube, the supply line and the filter. In a Normandale split-level we trace the line through the garage wall, because that is where it freezes. One named cause, one written price, and in most Bloomington kitchens the repair finishes from the truck stock the same visit.

Scale on the fill valve seat. Bloomington’s well water is hard, each fill leaves a trace, and the opening narrows a little every month. A new valve resets the fill volume. A softener kept in salt slows the return; a new filter helps only if the filter was the restriction.
