Pull a cube out of an Eden Prairie freezer and hold it up to the light. If it has a rust-colored blush, the softener has been letting iron through, and if it is small and hollow, scale has been choking the fill valve for months. Both are Eden Prairie’s well water at work. The city pumps hard water with iron in it, and the refrigerator’s ice maker takes that water through a quarter-inch tube and a solenoid valve that never gets flushed. Winter brings the other Eden Prairie ice maker call. A second refrigerator in a three-car garage off Dell Rd or Anderson Lakes Pkwy has a fill line running along the cold exterior wall, and when January sits below zero for a week the line freezes and ice production stops without a sound. It thaws in March and everyone forgets until the next winter. The rest of the year we see the usual module failures: an ejector motor that stopped mid-harvest, a mold heater that no longer releases the cubes, a door auger jammed by a clump of fused ice, and filters that were due to be changed a season or two ago.
Water is not reaching the tray. The fill valve is scaled shut, the tube is frozen, the supply behind the fridge is off, or the module has stopped calling for water. We test the valve solenoid, check for water at the tray, and inspect the tube before naming the part.
A partial fill. Scale in the valve or tube, low pressure at the supply, or a filter long past due. We measure fill volume and line pressure, replace a scaled valve, and change the filter if it is restricting flow, so the new valve is not fighting the same restriction.
Iron in the water, which means the softener is out of salt or in bypass. We check the softener, flush the line and the tray, change the filter, and clear the bin. If the fill valve has iron staining inside it, we replace it so the new cubes come out clear.
The mold heater or the ejector motor has failed and the cubes have frozen into a block. On some units the thermostat that triggers harvest has quit. We test the heater and motor with the meter and replace the module or its components from truck stock.
The auger motor in the door is stalled, the ice in the bin has fused into one piece, or the dispenser flap is stuck open. We break up and empty the bin, test the auger motor under load, and check the switch that lets the dispenser run.
A fill valve that does not seat fully after it closes, a cracked fill cup, or a tray overfilling because the scaled valve is slow to shut. We test the valve for seepage and replace it if it will not seal, then clear the ice that has built up beneath the tray.
The technician pulls the refrigerator out, checks the supply valve and puts a gauge on the line, because low pressure and a scaled valve produce the same small cubes. Then the meter goes on the fill valve solenoid and the module’s heater and motor while a forced harvest runs. That shows whether water is reaching the tray, whether the tray is freezing, and whether the module is releasing the cubes. In an Eden Prairie garage in winter, the tube gets checked for ice before anything else. You get the failed part named plainly and one number on paper. Approve it and the repair usually finishes that visit; decline and the $99 is your whole bill.

The tray is only getting part of its fill. On Eden Prairie’s well water, the usual cause is scale narrowing the fill valve or the tube behind the refrigerator. A filter that is long overdue does the same. We measure the fill, test the valve, and replace whatever is restricting flow so the cubes come back full size.
Iron. Eden Prairie water carries it, and a softener that has run out of salt or been left in bypass lets it through to the ice maker. Check the softener first. We flush the line, clean the tray and bin, change the filter, and replace the fill valve if iron has stained its interior so the new ice runs clear.
Yes. The fill tube runs along a cold cabinet wall and freezes when the garage drops well below freezing. We thaw the tube, check for a failed tube heater on models that have one, and reroute or insulate the line so it survives the next stretch of below-zero nights in Eden Prairie.
No. We work on the ice maker built into a refrigerator or freezer, including the door dispenser and the water line behind it. Freestanding and under-counter ice machines are a different type of equipment, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than charge you a diagnostic for it.
Sometimes. If the filter is overdue, change it; a clogged filter alone can starve the tray. But a filter does not remove hardness, so scale keeps building inside the valve no matter how fresh the filter is. If full cubes have not returned after a day or two, the valve or tube is the problem and the $99 diagnostic will pin it down.
