Almost always defrost. We pull the back panel, find the evaporator iced solid, and test the heater, the defrost thermostat and the thermistor with a meter. The failed piece gets replaced from the truck, the coil is thawed properly, and airflow to the top box comes back the same visit.
The start relay or the overload on the compressor is failing to bring it up. We test the relay and the compressor windings before anything is ordered. A relay is a same-visit part; a shorted compressor is a conversation about the age of the box and whether a sealed-system repair is worth it.
The defrost drain has frozen or plugged, so meltwater runs forward instead of down to the pan. We clear the drain, thaw the trough, check the drain heater where the model has one, and confirm the pan is catching what it should. In a Morningside kitchen, this is often mistaken for a leak from the wall.
Warm, humid air is getting in. We check the gasket for tears and the door for sag, test the defrost cycle, and look at the fill tube on the ice maker, which drips when the valve is scaled. Edina’s hard well water makes the last one more common than the first two.
