The ice maker is a small machine with a narrow throat, and Edina’s well water is hard, so the two do not get along for long. A fill valve that passes a measured shot of water begins to pass less as scale builds on its seat, the cubes shrink and hollow out, and eventually the valve either sticks open and floods the tray or sticks shut and the bin goes empty. In Country Club and Morningside the supply line was run under a 1920s floor and sometimes through an uninsulated crawl. The Indian Hills built-ins have their own filter housings and drain lines. We come across the Crosstown or up Hwy 100 and carry valves for all of them.
A frozen fill tube is the winter version of the same story. A scaled valve does not seal completely, a drip runs down the tube after every fill, the drip freezes in the sub-zero freezer, and within a few days the tube is solid and the tray stays dry. Thawing it with a hair dryer buys a week. Replacing the valve that let it drip fixes it. In summer the complaint flips to ice that tastes of the refrigerator or a bin that cements itself into a block because the door was left ajar during a humid July stretch near Lake Cornelia. Either way, the visit starts with a meter and a hardness test.
The fill valve is scaled shut, the water line or fill tube is frozen, the module motor or optical sensor has failed, or the shutoff arm is up. We test the valve electrically and by flow, check the tube, cycle the module by hand, and confirm the freezer is cold enough to harvest.
Not enough water per fill. Scale in the valve or its inlet screen, a spent filter, or low pressure from a saddle valve under the sink that has half-closed itself. We measure the fill volume in a cup against the specification and correct the restriction, then check the filter date.
The valve is dribbling after it closes, or the freezer is running colder than it should near the tube. We thaw the tube fully, replace the valve if it fails a seal test, and check the fill tube heater on models that have one. Thawing alone means we would be back in three weeks.
The valve is not shutting off cleanly, or the module is calling for a second fill. Scale on the valve seat is the common cause in Edina. We replace the valve, clear the ice from the bin and the auger, and run two harvests to confirm the fill is right.
The auger motor in the door bin has failed, the door flap is stuck open and letting the bin frost over, or the chute is packed. We test the motor and the flap solenoid, clear the chute, and check the bin gasket. On French-door models the ice room seal gets checked too.
An expired filter, a bin of old ice that has absorbed freezer odors, or a fill line that has grown a film. We change the filter, dump and wash the bin, flush the line, and run the first two batches out. If the refrigerator itself smells, that is a separate conversation.
An ice maker diagnosis is short if it is done in the right order. Freezer temperature first, because a freezer at 10°F will not harvest. Then the fill valve, tested three ways: coil resistance with a meter, flow volume into a measuring cup, and seal after closing. Then the module, cycled through a harvest while we watch the ejector and the heater. Then the tube, the line and the filter. In a Country Club kitchen we also look at where the supply line runs, because a line through a cold crawl freezes before the fill tube does. The result is one named cause and one written price. Most Edina ice maker repairs finish on the first visit from the parts on the truck.

Scale. Edina’s well water is hard, and every fill leaves a trace on the valve seat and in the screen. Over a few years the opening narrows and the cubes shrink. A new valve resets it, and a softener that is kept in salt slows the return. A fresh filter helps only if the filter was the restriction.
