The run from our shop in Eden Prairie to Minnetonka is straight up Hwy 101 or I-494, and the kitchens at the other end are some of the most varied we see. Around Glen Lake and Minnetonka Mills the 1960s and 1970s houses sit on wooded lots with a walk-out basement, and the kitchen refrigerator is often a twenty-year-old side-by-side that still runs because nobody has given it a reason to stop. Toward Ridgedale and along Hwy 7 the 1980s and 1990s houses have French-door units and a second fridge in the garage. Closer to Lake Minnetonka the kitchens have been remodeled around Sub-Zero, Thermador and Viking built-ins, panel-fronted and flush with the cabinets.
Built-ins fail differently from freestanding units, and Minnetonka has enough of them that we stock for it. A Sub-Zero with two compressors can lose the refrigerator side while the freezer runs on; a Thermador column can ice its evaporator behind a panel nobody has removed in ten years; a Viking’s condenser, tucked up behind the grille at the top, fills with dust and pet hair through five closed-window months until the compressor runs hot all July. The garage units on the wooded lots have the same January problem as everywhere else in the west metro: a thermostat that reads a cold garage as a cold box and stops the compressor.
The evaporator coil is iced over because a defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control has failed, blocking airflow to the refrigerator side. We test the defrost circuit with the meter, replace the failed piece, and clear the ice so both compartments hold temperature by the next morning.
On dual-compressor built-ins, one compressor or its start components have failed while the other keeps working. On single-compressor columns, a damper or evaporator fan has stopped. We identify the side and the component, and carry relays and fans for the common built-in lines.
The compressor start relay and overload are attempting to start a compressor and failing. We measure the compressor windings first; if they are healthy, a new relay from the truck solves it. If the compressor has failed, we tell you plainly and talk through repair or replacement.
The defrost drain has frozen or clogged and meltwater is backing into the cabinet. We thaw and flush the drain, check the drain heater on models that have one, and inspect the ice maker water line, which is the other common source of a puddle on a Minnetonka kitchen floor.
The evaporator or condenser fan motor has worn bearings, or a blade is striking ice. We isolate which fan, replace the motor, and look for the frost buildup that put ice in the blade’s path. On built-ins this is often the condenser fan at the top behind the grille.
The garage dropped below about 40°F and the thermostat stopped calling for cooling, or the compressor gave out from repeated cold starts. We test the control and the compressor and tell you whether a heater kit or a garage-rated model makes more sense than repairing a unit that will do this every winter.
The technician puts a thermometer in each compartment and a clamp meter on the compressor before touching a panel, because a warm refrigerator can be failing in half a dozen places and the readings sort them quickly. An iced evaporator points to defrost, a compressor drawing current with no cooling points to airflow or the sealed system, a compressor that is never asked to run points to a control. Approve it and the repair usually starts from the truck; decline it and the $99 is the entire charge.
