Walk around the back of a 1960s house on a wooded lot in Glen Lake or Minnetonka Mills and find the dryer vent hood. It is usually low on the foundation behind a shrub, under a foot of snow from December to March, with a flap that has not swung freely since the first hard frost. The dryer inside, in a walk-out basement laundry room, pushes hot wet air at a frozen flap, the lint packs behind it, and the thermal fuse opens to keep the cabinet from overheating. That is the winter dryer call from Minnetonka, and we drive up Hwy 101 from Eden Prairie with a vent brush and a box of fuses.
The newer houses toward Ridgedale and along Plymouth Rd moved the laundry to the main floor, which means a longer duct with more elbows before it reaches the outside wall and more lint per foot. On electric dryers it is the element or thermal fuse; on gas, the igniter, flame sensor or valve coils. The meter tells us which in a few minutes. Because a blocked vent is what blows most fuses, we measure airflow before fitting the new part so the same fault does not return in February.
Restricted airflow. A frozen or stuck vent flap behind the snow, a duct packed with lint, or a crushed foil transition behind the dryer. We measure airflow at the outlet, clear the run when it is the cause, and verify the moisture sensor and cycling thermostat are working properly.
Drum rollers worn flat, a seized idler pulley, a failing rear bearing or a glazed belt. We pull the drum, replace the worn support parts together, and check the blower wheel for the coin or hairpin that often adds a rattle of its own.
Turn the dryer off and call. Lint has reached the heating element or the burner, or a slipping belt is heating up. We clean the cabinet interior, inspect and replace anything scorched, and clear the vent. This call gets an early window because the alternative is a lint fire in a finished basement.
A motor with weak start windings, an over-temperature thermostat cutting out, or a control board dropping under load. On gas units, a flame sensor that cannot prove ignition stops the cycle too. We watch it fail with the meter attached so the cause is measured rather than assumed.
A door switch that no longer closes the circuit, a blown thermal fuse on models where it interrupts the motor, a failed start switch, or a tripped 240-volt breaker. We test the door switch first because it fails most, then trace power through the fuse and the board.
The technician opens the cabinet and clips the meter onto the heating circuit, reading the element or igniter, thermal fuse, thermostats and, on gas units, the flame sensor in sequence. Then the airflow gauge goes on the outlet and, on a Minnetonka walk-out, someone goes outside to look at the vent hood under the snow.
